SP0001 Ten Late Roman Bronze Coins - Select Grade

This lot is from a group of several hundred late Roman bronze coins
ranging from AE 4 up to follis size (mostly antoniniani, AE 3 and smaller folles).
A few Roman provincials and fourreé denarii have also been found in the group.
These are select quality coins, the best part of the larger group from which they were chosen. These coins have not yet received finishing touches needed to look their best and bring out their patina color. Their finish presently looks somewhat dull, since most have slight amounts of dirt or deposits on them and their patinas have not yet been polished. Notes on how we carry out this final step, which takes us perhaps 5 minutes per coin, are included with each lot.
The image shows a sample of 10 coins that received these finishing touches to better show their true condition and appearance. This is a reasonable sample of sizes and types. The coin at lower right is a fourreé denarius of Commodus.
The real detail in some coins is better than their appearance, because their surfaces have minor deposits that can be removed to reveal a clean surface. The Aurelian and Probus antoniniani in the top row both have such deposits, which were removed from test patches to verify their true surface condition.
There are also several dozen nicer coins, many with significantly intact silvering, which have been kept in plastic envelopes to protect their surfaces. One of these extra select coins will be included in each lot while they last, to be sure each collector gets at least one choice coin.
