Gordiani

Philip I and Philip II

Decius, Gallus & Aemilian

Philip.jpg (4745 bytes)
M. Julius Philippus
Emperor
244 - 249

Philip, a native of Arabia, became Prefect after the death of Timisetheus. He repaid Gordian for this trust by undermining the confidence of the troops and overthrowing him. Philip made peace with Persia and returned to Rome, where the chief event of his reign was the Millennial Games in 248.  In 247 his son became Augustus. The latter part of this reign was disturbed by the revolts of Silbannacus, Pacatian in Moesia and Jotapian in Syria. Philip sent Decius, a former governor of Moesia, to restore order after Pacatian's revolt, but the rebels acclaimed Decius, forcing him to assume the purple and march on Italy. Philip and his son confronted Decius at Verona, lost the battle and died in the fighting.
