Coins were invented on the western coast of Asia Minor (now Turkey) in the 7th century bc. Persia later annexed much of  this area, but many coastal cities remained free,  and continued to strike silver and electrum coins. When Alexander the Great conquered Persia, his imperial coins replaced most local issues.

After Alexander's death, coins of his successors were current until Rome began to take control. Then a new series of civic silver issues began, which was gradually replaced by the Roman Imperial coinage. Bronze coinage continued into the Imperial period (see Roman Provincial coins).
