Many Greek colonies were established in Southern Italy and Sicily, beginning in the eighth century bc. The area became so wealthy and powerful that it was known as "Magna Graecia," or Greater Greece.

Coinage as an art form reached its peak in Sicily during the 5th century bc, particularly in Syracuse. Many coin dies were signed by the artists who engraved these masterpieces.
