| The
Jewish war was the greatest Roman victory since the conquest of Britain,
costly both in
blood and treasure. Vespasian and Titus celebrated a triumph, bearing the Ark of the
Covenant and other holy symbols of Judaism to the Roman Treasury. A triumphal arch was
built and commemorative coins were issued. |

Aureus of Vespasian |
Roman
Republican denarii celebrating the victory of Marcus Scaurus
over Aretas III in the closing days of the Hasmonean dynasty
are included in this series. All other coins were issued by the Flavian dynasty to commemorate victory in the war of 66 ad. Most show a
mourning Jewess at the foot of a trophy or palm-tree. |
