The Persian Period and the Hasmonean and Herodian Dynasties
Under the Persian Empire,   silver coins were struck in Palestine in Gaza, Judaea  and Samaria. Most were small silver fractions such as obols and hemiobols.  Under Alexander the Great and his successors, Greek coins from Syria and Phoenicia were used.

Yehud Obol
Bronze coin of Herod

After the revolt of Maccabeus, Jews struck their own bronze coins with religiously approved types. This continued under the Herodian dynasty, though after the death of Herod I, the kings were virtually Roman governors. Rome annexed Palestine as a province in 96 a.d.
