Constantine II & Constans

Commemoratives.gif (14855 bytes)

The Founding of Constantinople: 330

Between 330 and 346, commemorative coins were struck to celebrate the founding of Constantinople. The best known types are reduced folles with Constantinopolis/Victory on prow, and Roma/Wolf and twins, but there are other varieties. Commemoratives were also struck for the founding of the fortress of Daphne, and finally two commemorative types were issued after Constantine's death in 337. Constantine was the last emperor for whom a death commemorative issue was struck.
