Constantine.jpg (3950 bytes)
Flavius Valerius Constantinus
Emperor 307-337

Constantine [b. ca. 285] was acclaimed Caesar on the death of Constantius in 306,  and Augustus in 307. A brilliant  commander and devious manipulator, he  allied himself with Maxentius, whose sister Fausta he married; their father Maximian, however, then tried to seize power and had to be executed for rebellion. After Galerius died, Constantine and Maxentius went to war and Maxentius was killed in battle at the Milvian Bridge [312].  Constantine then gave his half-sister Constantia in marriage to his ally Licinius, with whom he later went to war, eventually defeating him after several conflicts [324]. Deceived the vengeful Fausta, he executed his innocent first son Crispus [326], but on learning the truth, the grieving emperor had Fausta executed. In 330 he founded a new capital,  Constantinople; and while preparing to invade Persia in 337, Constantine died. In this reign  Christianization of the empire began. Deified by the Senate, Constantine had the singular honor of being venerated both as a Roman god and a Christian saint.
