Emperor 360-363

Julian, a nephew of Constantine, married Constantius' sister, and became Caesar [355]. He commanded effectively in Gaul until his troops, ordered to the Persian war, mutinied and proclaimed Julian emperor. Before he could meet Constantius in battle, Constantius died. Julian favored polytheism, and revoked the special status of the Christian religion. He made many reforms before launching a massive invasion of Persia where he lost his life in a skirmish [July 26, 363]. Jovian, captain of the Imperial Guard, was then proclaimed emperor. To secure the retreat, he made an unfavorable peace with Persia and withdrew to Roman territory, where he died [February 16, 364], supposedly suffocated in his bedroom by a charcoal brazier.
