Aurelian.jpg (8764 bytes)
L. Domitius Aurelianus
Emperor 270-275

Aurelian [b. ca. 207],  a soldier of outstanding ability and energy known to his men as "manu ad ferrem" (old hand-on-hilt), won a great reputation as a cavalry commander. As Emperor, he spent his first year repelling German invasions,  inflicted a crushing defeat on the Goths, then defeated Zenobia to bring the Eastern provinces back into the empire. He next campaigned in Gaul, restoring to the empire the provinces that had broken away under Postumus. After reforming the coinage and beginning the wall that bears his name around Rome, he set out to attack Persia and on this campaign, was overthrown by 0fficers misguided by Aurelian's secretary, who feared punishment after being caught lying to the emperor.
