Gordian I [b. ca. 157] was proconsul in Africa  when a tax revolt broke out. He accepted the purple, made his son Gordian II [b. ca. 192] joint ruler commanding the military forces, mainly militia. Gordian asked the Senate for recognition, which was granted, but when Capellinus, governor of Numidia, heard of the revolt he invaded with the Third Legion and quickly shattered the Gordian forces; Gordian Jr. fell in the battle and Gordian then took his own life April 12, 238.

After the defeat of the Gordiani, Balbinus,  a senator, was elected co-emperor for  administration and Pupienus,   a senator, was elected co-emperor for the military.  Before Pupienus could meet Maximinus in the field, the Thracian was assassinated. To win  popular favor, Gordian's grandson was made Caesar, but the people and the army resented the senator emperors. Pupienus fell out with Balbinus, who  wanted primacy, and this cost Balbinus and Pupienus what little respect they had. On July 29, 238 the Praetorians killed  them after a reign of 98 days.

Gordian [b. 225] was a figurehead dependent on Timisethius, his Praetorian Prefect, whose daughter he married.   Gordian campaigned against the Persians, and after Timisethius died on campaign, his successor Philip the Arab undermined Gordian and overthrew him.
