Severus Alexander

Macrinus.JPG (4475 bytes)

Emperor 217-218

Relatives depicted on coins:
Diadumenian - son

Macrinus (b. 164), a lawyer and Prefect at Caracalla's assassination, succeeded but his defeat by the Parthians led to a humiliating settlement.  Caracalla's cousin Varius Avitus Bassianus (b. 204),  hereditary priest of the Syrian sun-god Elagabal, was then touted as Caracalla's illegitimate son and  proclaimed emperor by the Third Legion. Within a month Macrinus was overthrown. Bassianus took the name Marcus Aurelius Antoninus,  beginning a reign of infamy marked by religious fanatacism, misgovernment and every kind of sensual excess, leaving the administration of the empire to his mother and aunts. After four years of this gross misrule the Praetorians assassinated Elagabalus and his mother on March 6, 222. He was succeeded by his cousin Severus Alexander.
