Commodus.jpg (3817 bytes)
L. Aelius Aurelius Commodus
Emperor 180 - 192

Commodus [b. 161] became Caesar in 175 and Augustus in 177. Hopes that the excellent rule of the Empire under his predecessors would continue were dashed when he allowed favorites to take over and retired to a life of pleasure. As his unstable nature degenerated into insanity, he came to believe himself  the reincarnation of Hercules, and fought in the arena to prove his valor. After several unsuccessful attempts, he was assassinated in 192.

Relatives depicted on coins:

This puzzling coin is the right diameter and weight for a quinarius.
In the absence of any known examples of a special quinarius issue
at the end of Commodus' reign, it is offered as an undersized denarius.
