Marcus Aelius Aurelius Verus
Emperor 161 - 180

Marcus Annius Verus [b.121] was adopted by Antoninus Pius, became Caesar in 139, and married Antoninus' daughter Faustina in 145. Lucius Verus was his colleague and son-in-law until his death in 169. Aurelius had a troubled reign, disturbed by frontier wars and a great plague that began in 165. Best remembered for his Stoic philosophy and his "Meditations," Aurelius unfortunately departed from the adoptive tradition by arranging the succession of his unworthy son Commodus. He died March 17, 180.
