Antoninus [b. 86] was a senator adopted by Hadrian a few months before his death. His great exertions to secure deification of Hadrian (hated by many senators) gained him the honorific Pius. His reign was wise and impartial and the Empire enjoyed peace and prosperity. Marcus Aurelius, selected as heir by Hadrian, was virtually co-ruler for much of the latter part of this reign. The death commemorative coinage for Antoninus Pius was the largest since Augustus.
