Trajan.jpg (4036 bytes)
Marcus Ulpius Traianus
Emperor 98 - 117

Rome's greatest emperor after Augustus, Trajan [b. ca. 53] was the son of a senator and had a distinguished military career  before his adoption by Nerva. Soon after his accession, he began an expansion policy, conquering Dacia, and carried out great building programs. The Senate admired Trajan, styling him "Best of Princes," but his reign ended in frustration when his plans to conquer the Parthian Kingdom, after great initial successes,  were ended by serious revolts in the Eastern provinces. Trajan died on his way back to Rome in August, 117.

Relatives depicted on coins:
Plotina - wife; Trajan Pater - father;
Marciana - sister;
Matidia - niece
