Nerva.jpg (3819 bytes)
M. Cocceius Nerva
Emperor 96-98

Nerva [b. 32], a senator with a long and distinguished career in civil service, was Consul in 71 and 90. After the assassination of Domitian, he was proclaimed Emperor by the Senate. His decision to pardon Domitian's assassins  led to threats of mutiny, which caused him to adopt Trajan as his heir. Nerva, in ill health,  then delegated power to Trajan and virtually retired. He died January 25, 98.
