Civil War
193-197

After Domitian's assassination, Nerva was proclaimed emperor. To win over the army, he adopted Trajan as his heir, and his successors followed this precedent. The century of the Adoptive Emperors was Rome's Golden Age, when the wealthy Empire was  at peace or victorious in war. After his dissolute son Commodus succeeded Marcus Aurelius, the Golden Age ended in a bloody civil war.
