Augustus 308-324

Licinius, a friend of Galerius, became Augustus of the West on the death of Constantius. He had trouble with Constantine, who had been acclaimed by his father's troops, but soon married Constantine's half-sister and joined him in issuing the Edict of Milan. Licinius then defeated Maximinus II to win control of the eastern empire, which he ruled until Constantine defeated him in 324. Licinius and his young son were spared after this defeat, but later executed for plotting against Constantine.
