The late Parthian Kingdom was almost continually at war with Rome, and it soon became apparent that with careful planning the Parthians were not really much of a military threat to Rome. Trajan overwhelmed them between 114 and 116 ad and later emperors successfully invaded Persia.

This weakened the Parthian Kingdom and led to its downfall. The sophisticated Persians hated the Parthians. They first rebelled under Papak (son of Sasan), then in 220 Papak's son Artashir overthrew the exhausted Parthians, and Persia reclaimed its old empire.
