Parthian Coins from the Early Parthian Kingdom

Descendants of Alexander's general Seleukos ruled Persia after Alexander's death. In 238 bc Arshak, king of the Skythian Parni tribe, overthrew the governor of Parthia, and the Parthians took over most of the Seleukid realm during the next century.

Parthian coins nearly all have the obverse type of the king's bust facing left, and the reverse type of a seated archer. Parthian kings were all styled Arsakes on their coins, making attributions a challenge.

This period ended with great Parthian victories over the forces of Roman invaders Marcus Crassus and Mark Antony, who each met with serious disaster invading Parthian Persia.

Despite these military successes, all was not well politically in the disunited Parthian kingdom, which continued to fear the might of Rome. Their great military victories did not provide lasting security, and instead gave Rome a motive for vengeance.
