Maximianus I

Constantius

Maximianus.jpg (7865 bytes)
M. Aurelius Valerius Maximianus
Caesar 285-286, Augustus 286-305, 306-308, 310

Maximian [b. ca. 240] became Caesar in the West while Diocletian campaigned on the Danube, and was elevated to Augustus in 286. While he was occupied in repelling German incursions, his admiral Carausius revolted and seized Britain. Maximian was unable to defeat Carausius, but the great frustration of this rebel regime was eventually overcome by Constantius Chlorus as Maximian's Caesar. Maximian was still in good health when he reluctantly retired with Diocletian in 305, and soon returned to the purple when his son Maxentius seized power in Rome. The old emperor retired again in 308, but returned to rebel briefly in 310 against Constantine, after which he was executed. Constantine, however, still allowed him the honor of a commemorative coinage.
