Asia Minor and the East

Roman Egypt

The cities of Asia Minor had  rivalries  suppressed since the days of the Persian Empire, but still very real. Under the Roman Empire these found their expression in civic prestige projects, including their coinage. Beginning about 180 this produced some fascinating numismatic issues, including spectacular medallic types.

By 240 the military and economic difficulties of the Roman Empire, particularly resurgent Persian strength under the Sasanian kings,  severely affected these cities and the provincial mints began to close. By the accession of Claudius II (268) few were still coining, and apart from Alexandria in Egypt, no provincial mints were active after 276.
