Eastern Europe and Greece

Asia
 Minor

The cities of Eastern Europe fell into two groups: Greek cities in Macedon, Thrace and Greece itself, and Roman settlements in Dacia, Moesia, Pannonia and Thrace.

Greek cities include famous names such as Athens and Corinth. Despite their antiquity and architectural splendor, these cities had limited economic power, as Greece was in decline and was becoming depopulated.

Roman settlements were what would in a later era be termed frontier towns - more rough and ready than elegant.

Among these was the military colony of Viminacium, capital of Moesia Superior and the key to defense of Eastern Europe. A military camp since the first century, it became a colony in 239, using the reverse type of Moesia between a bull and a lion, symbols of the legions stationed there.
