Roman Provincial Coins

Roman Coins

As the Roman Republic took over  the Hellenistic kingdoms, it became responsible for ruling numerous cities, each with a tradition of self government, including striking its own coinage. Under the Empire many of these cities continued to issue semi-autonomous coins, but very few were allowed to strike in silver.

The "Greek Imperial" series offers a rich variety of types, some of large medallic character. It continued until the mid third century, when the Eastern provinces were ravaged by invasions and the civic mints closed. These coins circulated for many years, and are normally found in somewhat more worn condition than Imperial issues.
