During Classical Greek and Hellenistic times, much of Northern Europe was occupied by Celtic tribes who traded with the Greeks. The Celts developed their own coinage by imitating Greek types.

Most Celtic coinage was issued by tribes in Gaul and Britain, but Celtic coins were also struck in Central Europe, mostly along the Rhine and Danube, and in Galatia, in Asia Minor.
